2008 Once again, our annual celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday was a smash hit! CCEA’s version of Read Across America kicked off at the TownMall in Westminster with our green eggs and ham breakfast where we served more then 150 children the unique breakfast with the help of the staff of Time Out Sports Bar. The ham was once again generously donated by Hahn’s of Westminster. More then 16 boxes of books that were donated by Random House, who has supported our event since the start, were given away to the children of Carroll County Dignitaries such as Haven Shoemaker, Mayor of Hampstead and Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, Maryland State BOE Superintendent read stories to the children. They were then off to any number of activities including hat making, face painting, karaoke provided once again by Ida Gist, or any of the other events around the mall. The Raven’s Bird, the Oriole’s Bird, Keyote from the Frederick Keys, Thing 1 & Thing 2 as well as The Cat in the Hat himself were also there. The combination of community support and association dedication has made what started out as a small event for the local community into one of the biggest celebrations of Read Across America in the state! And we can’t wait until next year’s event! THANK YOU
MEMBERSHIP NEWS We are always looking for new and exciting ideas for member benefits. We try to provide a variety events including ones that are family friendly. If you have any ideas for activities we can look into, please contact the CCEA office.
CCEA & BJ’s During our latest enrollment more then 100 CCEA members and their families received discounted memberships to BJ’s Wholesale Club. CCEA members received $10 off of the $45 price of membership as well as a free additional card for a member of their household and 3 more months at no extra cost. We run this opportunity periodically throughout the year so if you were unable to take advantage of it this time, be on the look out (BOLO) for the next one! CCEA SCHOLARSHIPS Don’t forget—If you have a child entering college, CCEA offers two scholarships for at least $1,000 each. The deadline for entry is 5:00 p.m. March 31, 2008. If you are interested in having your child apply for either scholarship, contact the guidance department at his or her high school. The CCEA Future Teacher Scholarship is awarded to any student entering collage with a major in education regardless of whether or not they are the child or grandchild of a member. All applicants must attend Carroll County Public Schools. The CCEA Member Scholarship is awarded to children, grandchildren of current, retired, or deceased CCEA members regardless of the recipient’s educational goals or place of residence. It is very important to make sure all of the directions for the application are followed completely and that no applications be submitted until all of the required information has been gathered. The Magic of Membership Our ever valuable trip planner Mr. Dave Anderson has been at it again! This year’s summer trip is to Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida from June 22-26. Members who responded by the deadline of March 3 were able to take advantage of huge discounts available simply because they are CCEA members. They will be staying at the exclusive Walt Disney Pop Century Resort while enjoying a five day Park Hopper pass for entry to all Disney theme parks.This is just the latest installment of the annual CCEA Summer Trips. In addition to the summer excursions Mr. Anderson plans, there are always outings in the works. CCEA has gone to New York City for Christmas every year for over 20 years as well as local opportunities for families to go to Hershey Park, skating parties, Broadway shows in Baltimore and so much more. Always keep an eye out for the next event planned by CCEA. Just another way we are working to make your membership work for you!
Membership Pays Don’t forget - Any new member you sign up banks you $10 to be received at the end of the year. Anyone who is in our bargaining unit is eligible to become a member. This includes any and all teachers, guidance counselors, specialists and RNs. Be sure to remember to put your name on the application so you will receive credit for this member. If your name is not on the form itself, you will not get the $10 bounty. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the CCEA office. We are only as strong as our membership!
